VOLUNTEER COACHING
Years post-college, my coach's question echoes: "What are you doing to give back to the game?"
Coaching soccer, basketball, and softball, witnessing kids grow from first practice to last is incredibly rewarding. The best part? Players returning, a testament to their positive experience.
My Lessons Learned Coaching Youth Recreational Sports
Cultivating Passion: Creating a foundation where players fall in love with the game. Regardless of wins or losses, when players genuinely embrace the process, they become eager to return every session, fostering a lasting passion for the sport.
Winning vs. Losing: While winning is enjoyable and losing less so, the nature of youth recreational sports means that joy and disappointment are fleeting. Life swiftly moves on, often to more exciting adventures, like birthday parties at a jumpy house shortly after the game.
Recognizing Micro-Wins: In every practice and game, numerous individual and team micro-wins unfold. They often hold more significance than the final score, shaping players' confidence and enthusiasm.
Understanding Body Language: Children may not always express their feelings verbally, but their body language speaks volumes. Observing cues helps in understanding their emotions and needs, fostering better communication.
Pushing Limits: Challenge your players beyond their perceived capacities. By pushing boundaries, they discover hidden potential and develop resilience, essential life skills beyond the field.
Nurturing Leadership: Encourage more experienced players to practice leadership. Guiding them to lead not only amplifies their skills but also creates a supportive team environment where everyone contributes.
2024 REKINDLING MY LOVE FOR THE GAME
In 2024, I laced up my cleats once again, stepped back onto the soccer field, driven not solely by the allure of the sport, but to immerse myself in a passionate community composed of individuals from various backgrounds, all united by the game.
I RUN, BUT I'M NOT A RUNNER:
EMBRACING THE JOURNEY OF A LIGHT JOGGER
Started 2023 with the participation in the Trielements Fitness' 90-Day Project Breakthrough Challenge, aiming to run 300 miles. Successfully completed 300+ miles in 90 days and continued running 3+ miles daily for 212 consecutive days (Jan 1 - Aug 31, 2023). Currently working towards a goal of running a minimum of 100 miles monthly throughout 2023.
2023 GOAL COMPLETED: Minimum of 100 Miles Each Month in 2023 (1,234.8 Total Miles Run)
5 Quick Lessons Learned from Light Jogging in 2023
1) Planning and Flexibility: Navigating challenges such as weather, family events, work commitments, and overall health requires adaptability. (Examples: When to run if I have a 7am flight / When to run if there is an afternoon storm / Where to run when traveling)
2) Avoiding Procrastination: Procrastination is detrimental, it can be overcome but missing days simply moves the miles back, but they aren’t erased.
3) Mental Clarity and Creativity: Averaging over 16 hours running per month serves as an excellent opportunity to clear the mind and generate new ideas, both in professional and personal spheres.
4) Continuous Targets: Celebrations are short-lived. Once the last mile for the month is accomplished, and the calendar turns, focus shifts immediately to the next target.
5) Personal Accountability: Ultimately, the responsibility to uphold the streak and meet mileage goals rests solely with oneself.
